Douglass hires ex-Mundy's Mill football coach Barrow

Thursday, July 24, 2008

Douglass' three-month search for a new head coach has ended. And ironically, the man they found is the man they beat in the first round of last season's state playoffs - Ken Barrow. Barrow's Mundy's Mill team lost to the Astros 35-21 last November. Now he will take over for Gary Cantrell, who resigned earlier this spring to take an administrative position at the school. Cantrell went 45-20-1 in six seasons at the west Atlanta school, including an 8-4 record last season. Barrow, who was 17-14-1 in three seasons at Mundy's Mill in Clayton County, has been working with the team all summer, waiting for the Atlanta Public Schools human resources department to finalize his contract. That happened late last week. "It took a while, but this is just a great opportunity," said Barrow, who later this evening will hold his first parents' meeting as the official head coach. "I'm really excited." Prior to taking over at Mundy's Mill, Barrow built the foundation at M.L. King, one of the state's most successful young programs. Under Barrow, the Lions went 3-7 in 2002, their first season. The next two seasons they were 22-5, which included a trip to the Class AAA semifinals at the Georgia Dome in 2004, Barrow's final season.
