Muskogee Rougher fast pitch softball is still in the early stages of its life, but you can’t tell that from the way they play.

HSSTM: How long have you coached Muskogee fast pitch softball?
Chambers: This is my eight year at Muskogee, fourth year coaching fast pitch.
HSSTM: Is this the best group of girls you’ve had in your four years of coaching here?
Chambers: Fast pitch players, yes. And we’re still young. We’ve got one senior, one junior and the rest are sophomores and freshman.
HSSTM: Is club softball helping or hurting high school softball?
Chambers: To me it’s helping and hurting. My opinion some of the girls go to club ball and the coaches don’t emphasis the hustle as much as a high school coach, then they come back and they’ve developed some bad habits. The upside is they get to play in some tournaments and they play much more then they get to in high school.
HSSTM: What are some of the different approaches you have to take when you’re coaching girls that have never played on club teams and girls that have always played on club teams?
Chambers: Well, it just depends on what coaching they got and what club team they played on. Some of the guys are more laid back. They may have had some success with club ball, but when they get to high school they may not be able to do some of those things they did on their club team. Some high school teams are real competitive and can play with club teams.
HSSTM: How difficult is it to win a 6A softball title in the state of Oklahoma?
Chambers: It’s tough, especially for Muskogee. Many of the schools in Tulsa and schools like Broken Arrow are about five to six years ahead of us in softball. My sophomore group is the first group that went through the fast pitch program when it started down here in Muskogee. Some teams have been doing it much longer than us, but we still compete.
HSSTM: Do you ever look at the rankings that are put out each week?
Chambers: Yes, I look at them. I use it as motivation for the girls everyday.
HSSTM: When you’re done coaching at Muskogee what kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
Chambers: That I tried to get the most out of all the kids and tried to give them all the opportunity to go to the next level. Having them prepared and ready for the next level and leave Muskogee with a great work ethic.
