10 THINGS YOU MUST DO TO BE SUCCESSFUL

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

People struggle with the process that leads to success. In actuality, it is really not that difficult to achieve. Yet, over 20% of the population lives at the poverty level or below. Most people think that success is only meant for the rich, attractive, and special families. But, the truth is that anyone can be successful. So what is the difference between being successful and being a failure? The next two articles will focus on success and happiness. This article will identify the first three of the ten things you should do to be successful. 1. Confidence in Yourself A. Use you own personal experiences and keep the conversation positive. B. Why are you in your current profession, and what do you hope to gain that profession? You build the confidence in yourself by discovering what you really enjoy doing. You have to believe in yourself and know that you can do it. 2. Resilience A. It takes "courage" to follow through to the end; to finish the race. Many individuals do not have the courage to pursue their dreams. B. At the beginning of the race you are excited and motivated. It isn't until the first leg cramp and a couple of miles into the race that you need to tell yourself to keep going. C. It is okay to slow down, but if you stop to rest, it will be difficult to get started again without great fortitude. Remember, the rest of the runners are going to keep going. When everyone is out of sight the motivation to run is now an individual effort. At this point, if you don't have a purpose why you are in the marathon, it makes it that much easier to quit. D. Keep the conversation, questions, and interest with others by asking them what they think and what they had to do that motivated them to be successful. One learner, a woman, told of how she was angry with her parents and decided to join the Marine Corps. She said basic training almost killed her and she didn't think she could make it. She explained the tears, the remorse for going against her parents and the determination she found in herself to keep going. 3. Overcoming Resistance A. Sometimes you just do not get the support you need to do the best you can. That's life and you have to accept it and overcome the feelings of rejection and depression. You can't let it get you down B. Again, go to the class for examples. I had a learner whose mother was completely against her daughter going to school. Her mother reminded her daily that she did not support her attending school. The emotion of the learner was strong and I had to say to her, "Well, you may not be getting the support you would like to have, but as a facilitator, I am telling you that you have made a great decision. The only way to better your life is through education. So, now everyday you are here, I realize it was a little harder for you than the rest of the learners, but it is making you stronger and giving you the character you need to be successful". Remember, character is built through challenging times and adversity; this is where your true character is revealed The next article will focus on the remaining seven steps that will help you be successful.
