Greenwood senior Rebel Clay scored half of her 10 points in the final minute to lift the Lady Bulldogs to the school's first state championship with a 42-41 win against Little Rock Christian in the Class 5A final.
Clay drained a three-pointer near the one-minute mark to pull her team to within a point and then drove the lane to score the game-winning bucket with 2.5 second remaining in regulation. The 5-foot-4 point guard was surpised to emerge as the hero in the program's biggest win ever.
“I’m not that much of a scorer really,” Clay told Leland Barclay of the Times Record after the game. “I am usually looking for someone else to get the ball to. I didn’t really see anyone open, and I knew the clock was ticking down, so I just tried to take it in and get a shot.”
Greenwood (22-10) finished the regular season third in the 5A-West. It's coach Clay Reeves first state title at Greenwood after winning three state championships at Greenland. Sophomore post Endsley Evans scored a game-high 17 points and was named Most Valuable Player.
