Central Indiana, IN

Monday, June 15, 2009

Now that the Indiana-Kentucky All-Stars girls and boys basketball series is in the books for another year, there’s one final summer Hoops Hurrah for your basketball enjoyment: The Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic.

And they are planning quite a gala for Saturday’s first annual event at New Castle High School Fieldhouse.

Many former players from the historic 1954 state-champion Milan Indians and the great Crispus Attucks teams from Indianapolis have been invited to attend as honored guests of the first annual event.

The Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic's primary goal is to give Indiana a more complete view of the state’s high school graduating seniors to the general public, while as many of Indiana’s former greats share their legacies.

In addition, agencies ranging from Domestic Violence to a Food Pantry to Big Brothers and Sisters will benefit from the event. Profits from the first annual Classic will go to the United Fund of Henry County, which consists of 19 different agencies ranging. Also a matching fund will be formed in the five school districts of Henry County to help families in need to purchase school books.

Many honorees are expected to join the Classic Tip-Off Dinner on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle. Persons wishing to attend should contact Steve Stremming of Excel HSports at (317) 285-8354, or e-mail him at chiefs@ori.net .

Some booth space remains available and the proceeds from those will go to the New Castle Athletic Department.

On Saturday, the day of the girls and boys games, those honorees in attendance will meet participating players and staff members at 10:30 a.m. prior to the first of four games involving central-metro teams and state teams.

Former New Castle and Indiana University standout Kent Benson, the 1973 Indiana Mr. Basketball, who’s one of the founders of the event, will be presenting the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Mental Attitude Award to one participating player from each team.
