Bentonville High School spirit squads encompass a large number of participants and have a history of success in competition endeavors, so they are not only successful in supporting school spirit but in their own athletic competition as well.

The selection process for a spirit squad at Bentonville is highly competitive. Last spring, there were over 240 students in attendance for the mandatory parent meeting before tryouts. Of those, approximately 205 tried out. After attending a 2- day clinic where they learned the material necessary for tryouts, 108 of the 205 were chosen for the 6 squads offered at Bentonville. Being chosen is definitely an honor and the requirements of participation are not to be taken lightly.

Cheer and Dance dance meet for class times during the school day 3 three days out of the week. The dance teams have a heavy practice schedule in August and September due to dance competition. Varsity Cheer cheer begins after school practice once a week in September as we they prepare for December competition. After school practices are scheduled as needed and as competitions approach or if there is a special circumstance, such as playoffs. The spirit groups enjoy school traditions, especially related to games against Rogers at home, where they celebrate spirit week activities leading up to those games and even design and sell special t-shirts for that rivalry.

Both the cheer and dance teams also enjoy success when it comes to competition. Dance has continued to qualify (finish in the top 3) each and every routine for the state competition for a number of years. They have then gone on to finish at the State state level in the top 3 three for each routine. Varsity Cheer cheer competed as a coed squadcoed squad for the first time this past year. They finished 2nd second at the Regional regional Level level and 4th fourth at the State state Levellevel. They will compete again this year as a Super Coed Squad. 9th Ninth grade cheer competed at the regionals this past year and finished 3rdthird. This past weekend at the state dance competition, that success continued with 9th ninth grade dance finishing 1st first in Hip Hop, 2nd second in Pom and 3rd third in Kick, JV dance finishing 2nd second in Pom, Jazz and Hip Hop and Runner -Up overall and Varsity varsity dance finishing 2nd second in Hip Hop and Jazz and 3rd third in Pom.

Spirit Coordinatorcoordinator, Tracy Kaufman, has a big job with all of the kids that she is responsible for and all of the tradition that comes with the program. It’s a job she doesn’t take lightly. “I am in my second year as spirit coordinator. My daughter, Jordan, is a senior varsity cheerleader. I am vested in this job for many reasons. I wanted to make a difference in “spirit” at BHS. My squads are amazing, talented, and great students academically. I am so very proud of them all.” She expects her kids to hold themselves to a very high standard as representatives of Bentonville High School. She reminds them through word and action that, “being Being a cheerleader or dancer is a privilege not a right. Uphold your position and set an example at all times. Remember, so many little girls (and boys) want to be just like you someday.”
