For the second time in the past four years, Greenwood won both the girls’ and boys’ Class 5A State Golf Tournaments.

The Lady Bulldogs won at Ben Geren Golf Course in Fort Smith on Sept. 25 and the boys followed with a victory at Hot Springs Country Club on Oct. 3.

For the Lady Bulldogs, winning was even sweeter after they fell 10 strokes shy of conference foe Harrison to finish second at the state golf tourney a year ago. This season, they received strong outings from Lindsay Terry, Megan Kelly and Alyssia Duvall, who qualified for the Girls’ Overall Golf Championship at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock where she finished 15th.

Not much was expected of the Greenwood boys’ team at the state tournament. Afterall, it didn’t even qualify for state last year and barely made it this year with a third place finish at the conference meet. But led by a 2-under par 70 by senior Kyle Barton and a 1-under 71 by fellow senior Garron Cabe, the Bulldogs were able to take home the title.

In Class 7A, Rogers junior Haley Sanders was the cream of the crop for Western Arkansas, finishing second in a playoff in both the 7A State Tourney and the Overall Golf Championship to Conway’s Mary Michael Maggio. Sanders won her previous seven events before running into Maggio at state.

Micah Radler, Hannah Lavy and Emma Lavy all turned is solid performances to help Fayetteville win its third straight 7A Girls Golf Championship while Bentonville came in second with help from Britny Brauburger.

In Class 7A boys, Rogers won the state title behind the foursome of Matt Keller, Jes Sanders, Hunter Mobley and West Loveland. None of the group fired worse than an 80 at the Highlands Golf Course in Bella Vista with Keller’s 76 leading the way.

Fayetteville scrapped for a second place finish behind senior Sawyer Radler’s 74 while Bentonville finished in a tie for third with Little Rock Central. Radler’s fourth-place finish at the Overall Golf Championships in Little Rock was the highest finish among 7A West competitors.

Pea Ridge senior Justin Doherty was easily the best golfer in the state as far as small schools are concerned. He shot a 3-over 75 to take top individual honors in the 3A State Tournament on Oct. 1 at the ultra-tough Big Sugar Golf Club in his hometown. He then finished 13th at the Overall Golf Championship in his second year to qualify for the tourney.
