Katherine Perry helped the Athens Drive girls win the state 4-A Golf Championship last fall.
On June 11, she did something even more dramatic, winning a local qualifier in Sanford to snag a spot in the U.S. Women's Open.
The 64th Women's Open will be July 6-12 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, PA.
Perry, 17, and a rising senior at Athens Drive, fired a three-under-par 70-71_141 to take medalist honors. She took one of six spots in the Open . At one point in her second round, Perry was five under par.
"I knew going in I had to shoot under par," Perry said Friday.
Perry, who lives in Cary, said her Athens teammates were there, pulling for her, wearing "Team Perry" t-shirts with "U.S.Open, here we come" on them.
The Tarheel Youth Golf Association ranks Perry Number One in North Carolina. She was also named to the TYGA's First Team Girls Golf Team for 2008. In May, she won the Vicki Disantis Girls Junior Championship Title.
The other five qualifiers include Kathleen Ekey of Sharon, OH; LPGA tour veteran Rosie Jones of Atlanta, 13-year-old Yueer-Cindy Feng of Orlando, FL, and Ashleigh Albrecht of Murrieta, CA.
