The Frisco Centennial marching band capped off a successful contest season by qualifying for the University Interscholastic League’s Class 4A state marching contest.

“Attending the UIL State Marching Band Contest was an absolutely outstanding educational experience for the band students,” director Tim Linley said after the band finished 17th. “Not only was the UIL SMBC a great performance experience, but it was a great learning experience to watch and learn from the best of the best in high school marching bands.”

The Titans band performed a custom arrangement of Michael Dougherty’s “Bells for Stokowski.” The piece holds a special significance to the Centennial band. It was one of the compositions the band played last spring for the TMEA Honor Band Contest. The honor band contest is the "concert" equivalent to the state marching contest; The CHS wind ensemble earned 2nd place "Runner Up" in the state finals.

The 140-member band perfected the arrangement and marching during long months of practice. The band had its first music rehearsals in preparation for the UIL contest during the first week of June. Marching practices started on August 1. The students also attended a three-week band camp, which offered two to three rehearsals each day. Once school started, the band rehearsed eight hours a week outside of the school day – in accordance with UIL guidelines – to prepare for contests and performances.

“Through months of dedicated practice, preparation and improvement, the band students were able to learn a great deal about creating and improving a product to its conclusion,” said Linley, who believes the experience will help his program next year. “We will take all of what we learned and put it towards next year's show.”
