Plano West’s first trip to the state tournament topped a strong season for Collin County volleyball teams.

The Lady Wolves (33-8) qualified for the state’s final four by defeating District 9-5A rival Richardson Lake Highlands in the Class 5A Region II finals. Plano West traveled to Texas State University in San Marcos to face a tough semifinals opponent in Austin Westlake. The Lady Chaparrals entered the tournament ranked second in a nationally and first in the state according to prepvolleyball.com. If the Lady Wolves qualified for the finals, they would play either defending state champion Amarillo (44-1), ranked third nationally by prepvolleyball.com, or Cypress-Fairbanks (37-2).

Plano West’s talented front line of Shannon Hawari, Maddie Jones and Jordan Kirk helped rally the team in the regional tournament. The trio especially played well in the Lady Wolves’ five-game victory over Round Rock Westwood in the semifinal. Hawari and Jones were credited with two kills each and Kirk provided an ace and kill in the final game. The three combined for 30 kills in the five-game match. Coach Brittany Bridge also credited the serving of Kayla Johnson and Michelle Harris in the win.

McKinney Boyd Reaches Regional Final

McKinney Boyd’s volleyball team made history in winning the program’s first district championship. The Lady Broncos swept Lake Dallas in three games for the District 9-4A title.

Unfortunately, the Lady Broncos’ bid for their first state title fell short in a dramatic five-game loss to Waco Midway in the Class 4A Region II finals. After losing the first two games 10-25 and 22-25, Boyd mounted a comeback to win the next two games 25-23 and 25-23, only to have Midway (45-1) win the fifth and deciding game, 6-15. Senior middle blocker Maggie Monogue led Boyd with 14 kills. Senior Jenny Ringqvist added 10 kills and sophomore Cara Howley had eight kills. Senior Maggie Bates contributed 22 assists and 11 kills. Senior Dani Davis added 18 assists.

The Lady Broncos finished their best season ever at 43-3.

Farmersville Advances to Regional Semifinals

The Lady Farmers ended a successful season just two wins shy of making it to state.

Seventh-ranked Jewett Leon defeated the Lady Farmers in the Class 2A Region II semifinal match.

After winning the District 10-2A championship, Farmersville defeated Palmer, 25-19, 25-14, 25-13, in the area round and Frankston, 18-25, 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12, in the regional quarterfinals.
