Bailey Belvis’ 3A title tops great Collin County state cross country finishes
Prosper junior Bailey Belvis pulled an upset winning the Class 3A girls state title in 11:30.30. Belvis, whose goal was a second-place finish, passed race favorite Argyle senior Kristie Krueger.
“My strategy was to move to the front within the first 800 meters and stay with the lead pack until the 3,000-meter mark. Then race for second place,” Belvis said.
Belvis saw an opportunity when she approached Krueger with 25 meters remaining.
“At the 3,000-meter mark, I moved into second and was able to see the leader. As I rounded the final bend I saw how close I was and decided to go for the win,” Belvis said. “Right at about 25 m to go, I knew I had the win. It felt great.”
The race was not Belvis’ first experience at the state level. She won a TAPPS state cross country title in 2005 while running for Frisco Legacy Christian Academy.
Belvis’ regular-season performance placed her among the area’s top runners. In this her first season at Prosper, Belvis finished first in several meets and competed well against Class 5A competition. She won the Frisco Invitational, McKinney Invitational, Plano Invitational and Ken Garland Invitational in Denton.
Belvis wasn’t the only Lady Eagle celebrating a great state performance. Teammate Sara Dietz, placed ninth with a time of 12:01.65.
Class 4A: McKinney North’s Ganter Medals
Stephanie Ganter of McKinney North finished third (11:29.80) in a photo finish behind Sara Sutherland of Highland Park (11:25.40) and Hereford’s Abby Metcalf (11:27.95). University Interscholastic League officials had to review video to determine that Ganter crossed the finish line third. Ganter’s North teammate, Sandy Castro placed eighth (11:54.30). Frisco’s Kerri Matulis placed ninth (11:56.50).
More Class 3A Results
Frisco Wakeland’s Joseph McKenna placed seventh (16:51.70) in Class 3A. Centennial senior Cole Reveal finished 17th in 16:25.05. The Titans placed 11th as a team. Lady Wolverine Haley Lyons crossed the line in 72nd in 3A as the sole representative on the Wakeland girls team.
Anna’s defending champ finishes second
Defending state champion Cody Hughes of Anna finished second with a time of 16:29.10 behind Jameds Hodges of Paradise (16:26.70).
