East Central's boys and girls track teams ran away from the competition during the state track meet by winning the trophy in both divisions for the 5A title. The boys outdistanced runner-up Ardmore by a score of 94-78, while the girls edged Altus 80-75. Other Green Country champs included Union's boys in 6A and Vian's girls in 3A. East Central was led by sprinter David Gordon who won a gold medal in each of his four events. Along with his gold medals from his sophomore year, this junior won the 100 and the 200 as well as helped the 400 and 1600 relay teams bring home the gold. His winning time in the 100 was 10.58 and he ran a 21.22 in the 200-meter finals. Teammate Derio Long won the 110-meter hurdles and was followed by Brett Davis of Shawnee and Demetrius Proctor of Tulsa Central who came in third. Long also placed third in the 300-meter hurdles. Other point gainers for East Central included Sydney Hadnot who placed third in the high jump and Donva Adkism who won the silver medal in the long jump. Other significant performances by area athletes included a silver medal in the 320- meter run by Skiatook's Brent Nuttall who finished ahead of Bishop Kelley's Jake Heinrick. Heinrick took home another medal for his third place finish in the 1600-meter run. Kelley's Alex Demand was the bronze medalist in the pole vault. The Skiatook Bulldogs also had two medalists with Josiah Cody finishing third in the shot put and Aaron Tomlinson who edged Long in the 300-meter hurdles to pick up the silver medal. The ladies of East Central were led by junior Cornesha Wilkerson, who also won medals in each of her four events. She won the gold in the 200 and with the 1600-meter relay as well as placing second in the 100 and with the 800-meter relay. East Central's victory was less certain as the 400-meter relay did not score points, but a second place finish by the 3200-meter relay team boosted the team's chances along with a gold medal performance by Tamra Grayson who won the 400. Will Rogers' Jordana Tucker won two medals in the hurdle events. She won the silver in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Thomas Edison picked up 3 medals with second place finishes by the 400-meter relay team as well as Paislei Finch in the 200 and Hayden Greenawalt in the 1600-meter run. Pryor's Katie Kerns helped her team win three medals as she finished third in both the 1600 and 3200-meter relay, the team placed third as well. Booker T. Washington picked up medals with a second place finish in the 800-meter relay and Autumn Moses' third place finish in the 400. Nathan Hale's Gabrielle Tucker picked up the bronze in the 100 and Chloe Berlioux of Bishop Kelley was runner up in the 800. In 6A Union boys win championship while girls finish third In the class 6A team titles, Union's boys continued their dominance by defeating Midwest City and Jenks while the girls picked up third place behind Midwest City and Edmond Santa Fe. The boys had many top performers and were led by junior sprinter Boyea Lockett. Lockett won the 100 and the 200 and helped the 400-meter relay bring home the silver. Other Union champions included David Jones who won the 3200-meter run over Broken Arrow's Ryan Farrar and teammate Taylor Monaghan. Thomas Roberson placed second in the high jump as did Brian Morris in the 300-meter hurdles and the 3200-meter relay team. Jenks earned most of its points in the distance events by placing first, second and sixth in the 800 and used those legs to edge Union in the 3200-meter relay. Senior Rob Redwine, who is headed to the University of Arkansas to continue his running career there, won the gold by edging fellow Trojan Nick Blackwell by about half a second. Senior Reese Jackson also won the silver in the 1600. Owasso's Jake Snedden won the silver in the pole vault, Sapulpa's Corwin Dugan won the silver in the shot and Bartlesville's Holden Mitchell placed third in that event. Stillwater's Nathaniel Winfrey picked up two medals as he placed second in the 110- meter hurdles and won the gold in the 300-meter hurdles. B. A.'s Farrar also won two medals with his silver in the 3200 as well as a gold for the 1600-meter run. The Lady Redskins were also led by top performances in the middle and long distances. Senior Sara Vaughn capped a brilliant career before she heads to the University of Alabama by winning both the 800 and the 1600. Teammate Sara Daggett won the 3200 and finished behind Vaughn in the 1600. Sprinter Janae Johnson finished third in the 200 and helped her 800-meter relay team pick up the silver medal. Jacqueline Hyder of Jenks won the gold in the discus with a throw of 130' 3". Other area medalists included: Rani Melvin from Enid - 3rd in the 3200, Bailey Winter from Claremore and Kristina Sednev of Broken Arrow - 2nd and 3rd in the 110-meter hurdles, Broken Arrow's 400-meter relay team - 3rd, Ponca City's Kristen Brunkow - 3rd in high jump, Jade Riggs of Tahlequah - 3rd in long jump. Broken Arrow also picked up two other silver medals in the sprints with Monaye Williams in the 200 and Sakia Taylor in the 400. The sprint story came from Midwest City though as speedster Carissa Levingston set new state meet records in both the 100 (11.57) and the 200 (23.69). 2A-4A In class 4A, championship performances came from Okmulgee's Herbert Byrd in the shot, Jay's Tyler Payton in the 800 and Dewey's Adam Carrell in the 300-meter hurdles. On the girls side, Vinita placed third as a team due in large part to the strength of their relays which won the 1600 and placed second in the 400 and 800. Claremore Sequoyah's Megan Fuller had a great meet with gold medal finishes in both the shot and the disc. In class 3A, the girls team from Vian won the state championship as the boys finished in fourth. Tahlequah Sequoyah's girls also finished fourth. Vian was aided by strong performances by Kiona O'Neal (2nd long jump), Dana Mingoes (2nd 200), Chelsea Stewart (3rd 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles), and the performance of the 400-meter relay (3rd) and the 800 meter relay (2nd). Their lone champion was Ashton Parent who won a close victory in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:00.94. Sequoyah found strong performances from third place finishes by Alissa Riddle (800) and Ashley Ross (1600). Those ladies also helped secure gold medals for the 3200-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay. Sperry's Alex Ervin won the 800-meter run and Beige Roberson of Choteau-Mazie picked up two gold medals for the shot and disc. On the boys side in 3A, Metro Christian's Ryan Schooley won the 3200-meter run, Beggs' speedster Chris Morgan won the 200 and Vian's 1600-meter relay also brought home the gold. Tahlequah Sequoyah's Lee Choteau blew away the competition in the 1600 and teammate Mike Soap set a new state meet record in the high jump with a jump of 6' 10". In class 2A, Hennessey High School had a good weekend with a second place finish by the girls and a third place finish by the boys. Evan Shimanek was the girls lone champion as she vaulted 10 feet to win the gold in the pole vault. Kelli Quimby won silver medals in both the 3200 and the 1600 and helped the 3200-meter relay team win the silver medal as well. Haskell's ladies 400-meter relay team also finished the season as state champions.
