Tennis titles in familiar places

Sunday, June 1, 2008

The high school tennis season wrapped up in May with some familiar teams at the top. Both the boys and girls teams from Bishop Kelley won state titles in 4A with Cascia Hall's boys finishing first and their girls team third in 3A. The boys title in 5A was won by Union and the Lady Trojans from Jenks won their 12th tennis championship. On the girls side, Jenks was aided by freshmen such as Gabrielle Siegler who placed third in No.1 singles and Safaa Aly who partnered with sophomore Rachel Scroggs to win the title in No.2 doubles. Freshman Lisa Waldron and junior Jennifer Buntz won their first title by defeating Enid's combo of Morgan Humprey and Mackenzie Zaloudek in No.1 doubles. Jenks senior Callie Huey won her first individual title by defeating Kristin Richardson of Claremore in No.2 singles. Enid tied with Edmond North for third in the state tournament. In 4A, the ladies from Bishop Kelley went into the tournament as the two-time defending state champions and swept all four divisions at the regional tournament. Their success was largely attributed to the Lewis Family who brought home plenty of hardware. Junior Andrea Lewis, who finished the season with only one loss, was champion at No.1 singles for the second year in a row while her older sister Abby was state champ at No.2 singles for the third year in a row. Andrea's twin sister, Amy, also won two titles with her victory in No.1 doubles with fellow two-time state champ, Meredith Burns. The No.2 double pair of Courtney Bowen and Julia Miggins finished in second place. During the boys tournament, Travis Fillmore of Tahlequah went out on top of his game by winning the No.1 singles title in 6A with a hard fought victory over Union's Eric West. West was the 2007 tournament titleholder and out of their six meetings this season, each of them won 3 matches. West graduates as an All-American and won state titles in 2006 and 2007. Jenks' Omar Aly took the bronze while Muskogee's Micah Lemoine finished in fourth place. In No.2 singles, Brandon Finerty of Muskogee won the title over Union's Harry Warden and Jenks' Brandon Champagne finished in third. Union's team title was secured with first place finishes from both doubles teams. Ryan Proctor and Trevor Horstmann beat Jenks' Drew Freeman and Zach Siegler in No.1 doubles while Logon Collions and Taylor Gallien won No.2 doubles over Edmond Memorial's Aaron Krause and Bowen Xu. This was Union's fourth straight tennis title. They scored 32 team points and were followed by Jenks at 25, Edmond Memorial with 18 and Muskogee in fourth with 14 points. In 4A, Bishop Kelley sought to defend their 2007 title after winning their regional tournament and they ended up sweeping all four divisions. Sophomore Cale Hammond sought to overcome his No.1 singles regional loss to Booker T. Washington's Evan McElwain. Hammond won the title and was followed by McElwain, McAlester's Lauka Radulovic in third and Skiatook's Bryan Canavan in fourth. Hammond's teammate, Reider Hunt finished first in No.2 singles by defeating McAlester's Tucker Olsen. B.T.W's Jonathan Evans placed third. Nick Isom and Cameron Schoenhofer won the No.1 doubles title while Payton Fesperman and Brennan Fox finished as state champ in No.2 doubles. Kelley finished with 36 team points and Washington placed second with 19 points. Cascia's boys won their seventh state title with first place finishes in No.1 and No.2 singles and No.2 doubles with runners-up in No.1 doubles. Chris Gordon and Chase Tomlins won the singles titles respectively and Kyle Tolbert and Connor Sokolosky won the doubles. James Adams and Andrew Fields finished second in No.1 doubles. Gordon joined a short list of players to win four state titles with victories in No.2 singles in 2005-2007. The only other Oklahomans to accomplish this feat were Pat Connor of Bartlesville (1978-1981), Brandon Bethea of Heritage Hall (1991-1994) and former teammate Patrick Collins (2004-2007).
