A Shootout at Hickory Stick

Central Indiana, IN

Friday, June 6, 2008

The boys golf regional at Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood has always seen its far share of talented teams and golfers. Thursday was no different. Near the end of the regional, favorites (and top ranked) Avon and Cathedral were holding down the top of the leader board. Brebeuf was slotted in at No. 3 - the final spot that advances to next week's state finals. It was then that the drama unfolded. Players had battled high temps (90 degrees most of the day) and strong wind gusts, so as tired players approached the finish, shots became extremely important. Center Grove senior Alex Jones posted a 77 and the Trojans moved past the Braves - by one stroke, 317-318. At one point during the match, Center Grove had trailed Brebeuf by four strokes. The trip to state finals will mark the Trojans 10th appearance at state. No. 1 Avon advanced with a low-score 295. No. 2 Cathedral was second with 305. Perry Meridian senior Aaron Monson shot a 72 to advance, while Zionsville sophomore Graham Singer shot a 73 to move on. Greenwood senior Corbin Mitchell advanced for the second year individually after shooting a 75. Roncalli senior David Holmes also advanced with a 75. The boys state golf finals, held at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin, will tee off Tuesday, with final round action to be played Wednesday.
