Wolfpack, Royals win their first ever State Titles

St. Paul, MN

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

Woodbury and Park of Cottage Grove took home their first-ever State Championship trophy yesterday. The Woodbury girls team took the title with a 14 point lead over Forest Lake and the Park boys team won behind the leading score of 69 by Billy Barnhart. The Royals showed their depth with all five golfers turning in good scores. The usual No. 3 golfer Mary Sweeney had the best score with 81s each day, a total of four strokes over their second highest score by Jackie Rolando. Chelsey Larson followed it up with a 167 total, Jessica Swanson had a 183, Anna Hagermeier shot a 184 and Sarah Strand finished with a 197. The team effort of Park was lead by the two top scores of 141 and 145, by Barnhart and Beau Anderson respectively. Following them was Jake Miller (157), Jack Barnhart (158), Craig Fischer (159) and Dylan Sawicki (173). Barnhart's score was good enough for first place on the individual list with Alexandria's Gordy Diekman and Apple Valley's Tyler Ekenberg both finishing one stroke back. In a tight race on the girls side, the leader was Ali Nelson of Moorhead who shot a 150. Austin' Catherine Wagner placed second with a 151 and Lizzy Carl of Henry Sibley came in second with 152.
