Woodbury girls golfers earn VYPE Team of the Week award

The Woodbury girls golf team is the VYPE Team of the Week after the Royals won their 11th-consecutive section title last week in the Section 3AAA Championship Meet at Phalen Golf Course in St. Paul. Woodbury claimed an 18-stroke victory against the likes of Eastview, Eagan and Rosemount, who were folded into a reshuffled section field. It was supposed to be a tougher field for the Royals, but in the end none of the three could handle the depth of the Woodbury sextuplet. The Royals, ranked fourth in Class AAA, finished with a 314, that not only bested the second-place Irish by 18, it was also the lowest section championship score of any of the four Class AAA State competitors decided on the day — by a full 20 strokes. Mary Sweeney led the Royals with a third-place, four-over-par score of 76; she was followed by teammate Jackie Rolando's fifth-best card of 78 and Anna Hagemeier's sixth-place finish of 79. Chelsey Larson rounded out the top four scores with an 81, with Jessica Swanson and Sarah Strand shooting an 87 and 88, respectively. The Class AAA Tournament will begin June 3 at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids.
