Waltrip Chooses New Mexico State

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Fort Gibson senior Billy Waltrip signed a college letter of intent to play baseball at New Mexico State University.  The 6-1, 210 pound lefty for Coach Randy Smith put up impressive numbers last season while leading the Tigers to the Class 4A state baseball tournament.  While swinging the bat for a .375 average, Waltrip used his 90-plus mile per hour fastball to produce a 6-1 win-loss record recording 67 strikeouts in 42 innnings and a 2.48 ERA. While Waltrip's college choice is firm, the Tigers' senior may have another choice to make...should the major league draft become available.  "What I really want...is a State Championship this spring," said Waltrip.
