Pondering post-season football scenarios…

High School

Plano West may not have pulled off the colossal upset, but a nine-point loss to Cedar Hill, the top team in Texas, is a respectable score. I still think the state title will be awarded to either Cedar Hill or Allen, with Cedar Hill as the favorite.

Plano’s win keeps its playoff hopes alive though its next challenge is daunting: overpowering Trinity, who is coming off an 88-27 thrashing over Flower Mound.

Biggest game of the second round? Arlington vs. Odessa? Skyline vs. DeSoto? My guess is Carroll vs. Allen. It’s a matchup of two high school powerhouses who have run into each other in the playoffs several times.

College

It’s that time of the year again…when schools from the small-markets are excluded from BCS bowls because they make less money for the NCAA. Case in point: TCU and Boise State, both of who will surely lose out on a chance for the national championship. Here’s how it breaks down:

Texas has played one team that is currently ranked in the top 25, and that team (Oklahoma State) was playing without its best player, Dez Bryant. They will likely play unranked Nebraska and Rex Burkhead in the Big 12 championship.

TCU has defeated three teams in the top 25, and on Saturday, they demolished Utah to the tune of 55-28.

Based on those resumes, who has done better this season? I guess we will never know, because Texas and TCU will win out, and TCU will have to settle for fourth place.

So what’s the point? ADD SOME PLAYOFFS!

NFL

Disappointing loss for the Cowboys. Their offense looks anemic, especially when Miles Austin isn’t getting the ball. The Packers managed to stay in the playoff race with their gut-check victory.

The Redskins actually won a game. Even against the Broncos. Perhaps Denver will be like the Lions from a few years ago, when they were off to a 6-2 start and slumped down the stretch.

The Bengals are the real thing. For the past few weeks after another impressive Cincinnati victory, fans said, “let’s wait until they play team X before we pronounce them as great.” No more excuses. Beating the defending champs puts them at number two in the AFC right now.

San Diego might actually live up to its potential. Same with the Cardinals.

The Colts vs. Patriots game was mind-numbing. The two best QBs in the NFL played like future hall of famers, doing whatever they could to gain a win. This time around, Bill Belichick’s infinitely large ego was his downfall. You never, ever go for it on fourth down behind your own fifty. Especially in the fourth quarter against Peyton Manning. This isn’t Madden for XBOX, where punts occur once in a blue moon. At least New England has no competition in their division.
