Dallas-Fort Worth area runners dominated the state cross country meet held Saturday in Round Rock. Here are the top stories from this year's meet:
Marcus Junior Wins 5A State Race
Flower Mound Marcus' Craig Lutz posted the second-fastest time in history to win the Class 5A individual title at the UIL state cross country meet. Lutz posted a time of 14:45.24 seconds, just under 11 seconds off the state record time of 14:34.10 set by Plano's Scott MacPherson in 2004. Arlington Lamar’s Jeff Arnier finished fourth with a time of 15:16.00. Connor Adams of Flower Mound placed seventh (15:27.16) and Neal Smith of Southlake Carroll came in eighth (15:27.67).
Lutz's performance helped Marcus to a fourth-place finish in the team standings behind The Woodlands, Klein Oak and Cedar Park. Flower Mound finished fifth and Keller Central placed 11th.
Southlake Carroll, Coppell, Flower Mound Earn Top-10 5A Finishes
Plano’s Rachel Johnson finished second in the individual results with three seconds behind Sarah Andrews of The Woodlands’ gold-medal time of 10:45.09. Alyssa Nielson of Colleyville Heritage came in fourth (11:14.17). Coppell’s Kim Kirby placed seventh (11:24.92), Hebron’s Natalie Coday was seventh (11:26.84) and Jessica Harper of Southlake Carroll finished 10th (11:31.07).
The Southlake Carroll girls’ team placed third in the 5A race. Coppell came in sixth and Flower Mound finished eighth.
Frisco Liberty Boys Medal in 4A
The Frisco Liberty boys’ third-place finish was the highest result among area 4A teams. Highland Park placed ninth.
Eduardo Rodriguez of Adamson placed 10th (15:55.68).
Boswell’s Escobar Wins 4A State Race
Maggie Escobar of Boswell won the 4A girls individual results with a time of 11:14.78. Meghan Shea of McKinney placed fifth with a time of 11:26.62, Carly Kitts of Midlothian came in sixth (11:31.28) and Frisco Wakeland’s Maddie Zimmerman was 10th (11:39.15).
Highland Park Girls Place Second
The Highland Park girls’ team finished second in 4A behind Humble Kingwood Park. Senior Sara Sutherland placed eighth with a time of 11:35.75. Boswell was third, Frisco placed sixth and McKinney was 10th.
Argyle Boys Win 3A
The Argyle boys won their third consecutive Class 3A state team title, finishing 23 points ahead of second-place Lovejoy. Jake Roberts was Argyle’s top finisher, placing sixth with a time of 16:05.57. Adrian Nevarez of Prosper placed second (15:55.26) and Lovejoy’s Jake Hervey was ninth 16:18.95.
Lovejoy, Argyle Girls Medal
Lovejoy’s girls’ team finished second to Decatur but Argyle’s Colbea Harris won individual honors with a time of 11:34.44. Lovejoy’s Katie Ruhala was fourth (11:51.93)
