As fall sports wind down, VYPE is looking for tough players with strong athletic and academic aspirations that are currently gearing up for their sports season. One such player is Devin Masone, a homeschooler and basketball player at Lighthouse Christian Academy.

Averaging 25 points a game, five assists and four rebounds, Point Guard Devin Masone is both a talented and quick on his feet. He also performs well off the courts by maintaining a 3.6 GPA.

Masone started playing basketball after he was introduced to the sport by his dad at age 6, but another important mentor in his life is former Wake Forest-Rolesville Men’s Basketball Coach Chuck Hess. Masone attributes his work ethic to Hess, and still calls on the coach for advice about his game.

“Opposite of fans, you need someone to look at you critically for you to do well,” said Masone.

Schools like Warren Wilson College and Belmont Abbey College are already vying for Masone’s favor, but the junior point guard is also interested in Campbell University and N.C. State. Playing for the NBA would be a dream in Masone’s mind, but he would welcome the chance to travel abroad and play professionally in Europe. He’s looking forward to the start of the season, which began on Friday, Nov. 6 when the Lighthouse Academy team traveled to Greensboro to compete.

“We’ve really jelled, we look out for each other and not just on the basketball court, but in life,” said Masone.
