Georgia High School State Tennis Championships

Monday, May 19, 2008

Northview stamped itself as Georgia's best boys tennis team, and four other schools renewed dynasties Friday at the state finals at the Clayton County Tennis Center at International Park. GAC's boys and Walker's girls won in Class AA, and Athens Academy's boys and Brookstone's girls claimed the Class A titles. Northview, winning Class AAAAA for a third consecutive season, defeated Etowah 4-0 and finished 25-0, losing only six individual matches. "This team would be one of the best ever to come out of Georgia," said Ricky Doverspike, Northview's No. 1 singles player the past two seasons. "We definitely made our mark. I'd love to see other great teams in history and how they match up." Doverspike, who has signed with Alabama, finished his career with a 79-2 record after a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Jeremy Becht. Davis Dawson, also a senior, beat Garrison LaDuca 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles for the winning third point. Dawson also clinched Northview's 2006 state title. Matt Homan and Trevor Getz at No. 1 doubles also won and were unbeaten. GAC's boys (22-2) beat Wesleyan 3-0 to win their fourth in a row. Chad Day and Kyle Walker started on each of them. "After winning the first three, you can't lose your senior year," said Day, who played No. 1 singles. Walker (16-8) beat Wesleyan 3-0 to defend its girls title, but it was closer than the score. Wesleyan threatened to sweep doubles until Walker sophomore Katherine Oudin defeated freshman Caroline Price, daughter of former NBA player Mark Price, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Oudin, 23-0 this season, had beaten Price twice this season, but each time in three sets. Both are nationally ranked. "She was definitely the hardest [player I faced this season]," Oudin said. "I was really nervous, because a lot of school people had never seen me play, but the cheering really got me going. It helped me concentrate." In Class A boys, Athens Academy (15-5) won its first title since 2004 and 11th in history by beating defending champ St. Francis 3-1. Three Athens Academy starters are sons of former University of Georgia players — Scott Foster (son of Tom Foster), Kyle Crymes (Brent Crymes) and Joey Miller (Allen Miller). Crymes won the clinching point at No. 3 singles, beating Michael Brazil 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Brookstone's girls beat Athens Academy 3-0. It was the fifth title in seven seasons for the Columbus private school.
