Houston’s St. Pius X can play first-team can play with just about anyone around the Greater Houston area. While they lost to Sealy High in a close contest, the Panthers are wrecking their opponents as should be state favorites in the TAPPS division.

The Panthers manhandled St. Thomas 63-0 in a pouring rain Thursday night. Despite the in climate weather, St. Pius’ stars shined brightly.

Texas-commit Greg Daniels crushed the pocket all night and was physical on the run from the defensive end position. Kirk Poston did the same from the other side and showed why a half dozen schools have already offered him.

“I think Kirk is nearing a decision,” coach Rene Ramrirez said. “He’s a high motor guy and a great student. He was most recently offered by Colorado, but I know he is waiting on UCLA. He also really likes Missouri.”   Athlete Venric Mark showed off another gear in several rushes and had over 100 yards in early action. He was taken out of the game for much of the second half due to the score. He had a 60-plus yard rush for a score and a 50-plus yard catch and run that was called back.

“He’s pretty special,” Ramirez said. “He’s a homerun threat every time he gets it.”

Mark’s top three include Vanderbilt, Arizona and Northwestern and a decision is looming.

St. Pius also had two impressive juniors to watch. Cornerback Kolby Griffin, who holds an early offer from Baylor, didn’t play due to an ankle sprain, but linebacker Kellen Jones (6-foot-2, 190-pounds) dominated the game. Jones had an interception, a blocked punt, and fumble return for a touchdown and several sacks in the contest.

“Jones is so big and athletic that he’s a can’t-miss guy,” Ramirez said. “He can cover some ground.”

Receiver Tad Ecby (6-foot-0, 180-pounds) and running back Bradley Ward were also impressive juniors to watch.
