Athletes come in all shapes and sizes, and this is no more apparent than on the cover of VYPE.
Over the past months we’ve showcased golf, volleyball, cheerleading, basketball, lacrosse, baseball, diving and football.
In October, we featured the Big Rigs: Linebackers and linemen whose sole purpose on the gridiron is to hit people.
This month, we have another form of fierce competitors: Pit Bulls in Poodle Suits – our queens of the tennis court.
On the day we set up our cover photograph, these girls were going at each other in the NCHSAA playoffs on the court. But at the end of the day, they are bonded through friendship and the sisterhood of the athletic woman.
I think the most interesting feature of this group of girls is their focus.
Like laser beams, they have their sights set on their future. They know exactly what they want and have a plan for getting there.
They harbor no illusions about going pro, or not. They know exactly how many scholarships Division I colleges have available for women in sports, and believe that the idea of trying to snare one is a no-brainer.
Melis Tanik, a Ravenscroft senior, bound for the University of West Virginia put it in no uncertain terms.
“As girls in sports, we are lucky. We have so many scholarships available, and that gives us so many opportunities go to college and continue to play,” she said.
Goals, drive, determination packaged attractively and tied up with a ribbon of fun. That’s what VYPE’s November sports women are made of.
