Coaching isn't an easy profession. You're expected to win and to teach young kids life lessons through sports. HSSTM wondered about all the challenges coaches faced, and asked them what they found most difficult about their jobs. Here is what some of them had to say:

I think that the hardest thing in coaching high school kids is how busy they have become. Personally, coming from the college level it was a shock to see the amount of time student-athletes spend doing things other than your sport. There are many two- or three-sport athletes and it is hard to get them to practice on a daily basis.

The hardest thing to deal with when it comes to coaching high school-aged students is their schedule. Nowadays you have so many different students that are in more than one activity or program. It is hard to work with their schedules and find time to fit in everything you hope to achieve. Sometimes I will have a student who is in five or six different organizations or programs. Making time for each one of those programs and still fitting in everything you hope to do becomes very tough.

Martin Baseball
The hardest thing about coaching high school aged kids has a two-fold answer. First, trying to keep the kids team-oriented. Everybody has some selfishness in them, especially teenaged boys. If we can get the majority of the team to think about the team first before themselves then we will have a successful season. Second would be trying to keep emotions out of the equation. Teach kids how to deal with success as well as failure. Don't let your emotions get too high or too low. Stay on an even keel and your game will be more consistent.
Larry Hughes
Carroll Baseball
The hardest thing is just to keep high school kids focused on the task at hand. That and also getting them to trust that a high school coach can know a little baseball. They are so used to doing lessons with ex-big league players, etc.
