Regular Season Jul 5, 2009

College recruiting has become an intense and sometimes confusing process. VYPE asked area coaches what they would change about the current recruiting process. Here are some of their responses:
Hal Wasson
Southlake Carroll Football
One of the things I would like to see changed is all the junk mail they send to athletes that they are not really interested in. Even though we try to educate our players on what type of mail is pertinent and what type is not, it sends a false message to them that there is interest when in reality there is none. This leads many times to players going to a summer camp or attending a game at that particular university when there is very little interest at all in them.
Tim Buchanan

I would do away with early commitments. This causes problems for high school coaches once kids have committed (kids sometimes forget they are still playing for their high school coach) and forces colleges to make decisions on kids when they are sophomores and/or juniors in high school.
Jeff Hulme
Mansfield Football
The early commitments and the pressure to commit early. Too many kids mature late and have great senior years, but no one has any openings. It puts too much pressure on the young sophomore or junior to have an outstanding year.
Richard Barrett
Kennedale Football
Somehow holding the recruiters accountable would be nice. Being honest and telling an athlete the truth would be a good place to start.
