Measells sharp on mound as Patch sweeps Hohenfels

Friday, May 8, 2009

EUROPE-Patch freshman Dylan Measells faced the minimum 15 batters in a five-inning, 11-0 run-rule victory Saturday to complete a sweep of visiting Hohenfels.

Measells allowed no hits, struck out five and picked off the only batter he walked for the Panthers (7-1 overall and in the East region).

Patch won the opener 8-3, behind another freshman hurler, Ohmar Gonzalez, who allowed two hits in six innings.

Patch had only five hits in the opener, but led 5-0 after the first inning.

Ryan Tannenbaum and Quinton Austin each drove in two runs in the opener for Patch, which got a triple and RBI from Garik Stein.

John Leon, who doubled home two runs, took the loss for the Tigers, who committed seven errors behind him.

In game two, Austin’s third-inning grand slam was all the run support Measells needed. P.J. Redmond and Justin Quimby each drove in two runs for Patch. John Mesch allowed 10 hits and 10 earned runs for Hohenfels (1-5 overall and in the region).

In other baseball games:

Heidelberg 13-4, Mannheim 0-12: Saturday at Mannheim, the Bison saw the best and the worst of Heidelberg’s pitching staff.

Winning pitcher Jamal Pope was masterful for Heidelberg in the five-inning opener, striking out 10 and allowing just two singles.

Pope, whom coach Chris White called "dominant," supported his own cause with a double and two RBIs, and teammate Will Domko was 3-for-4 with a triple, double and two RBIs.

In the second game, Domko again drove in two runs for Heidelberg, but no Heidelberg pitcher was able to find the strike zone, and the Lions (5-1) lost for the first time this season. Rafael Ramos, who went 3-for-3, sparked the Mannheim offense by stealing five bases.

Tom Findlay allowed just three earned runs in winning the time-limit-shortened four-inning game for Mannheim (3-4).

Wiesbaden 13-9, Ansbach 1-7: Saturday at Wiesbaden, Mike Phillips doubled and drove in four runs in the first game to make a winner of T.J. Rieger. Rieger went the four-inning distance, fanning eight and allowing just two hits.

In the time-limit-shortened nightcap, Wiesbaden (4-5) scored three runs in its half of the extra inning and held Ansbach (0-8) to one.

Ansbach threatened to win the game in regulation, loading the bases with no outs, but Chance Martin came on to record two strikeouts and retired the third batter on a grounder to keep the score tied 6-6.

Vilseck 10-17, Bamberg 4-2: Saturday at Bamberg, Jarrod Alston struck out five in going the five-inning, time-limit distance in the opener. He was backed by a single and double in four trips by Will Pomares.

In the three-inning, run-rule-shortened nightcap, Kyle Krajcovik was 3-for-3 with a two-run homer and two steals. Chris Nelson picked up the victory for Vilseck (5-1).

Bamberg fell to 3-3.
