Ramstein Boys Win European Title

Friday, February 20, 2009

MANNHEIM, Germany — All-Europe forward Brent Schuck banged home two three-pointers, and Evan Canfield went 3-for-3 on his first field-goal tries Friday night as the Ramstein Royals broke out to a 19-4 first-quarter lead and went on to down the Heidelberg Lions 53-47 in the boys Division I championship game. "This was worth waiting for — all 700 days, including when I sat on the bench my sophomore year," said the 6-foot-7 Schuck, who finished with 18 points. Ramstein, which finished second to Heidelberg the past two years, won it first European basketball title since 1997. Heidelberg looked hopelessly out of it with just eight minutes left, trailing 43-29 at the end of three quarters, but the two-time defending champs weren't ready to throw in the towel. All-Europe guard Chris Frazier dropped in a three-pointer to open Heidelberg's not-quite-enough comeback, which got the game as close as five points with 1:09 to go. "We knew they'd come back on us," Canfield said. "We knew we had to keep up the intensity."
