Union’s Jeremy Smith is listed as one of the top running back prospects in the state and nation for 2008. Smith, who has verbally committed to Oklahoma State, rushed for 1,744 yards on 256 carries (6.8 average) during his junior season for the Redskins. Smith also finished with 20 rushing touchdowns. The 5-foot-10, 197-pound senior-to-be is ranked as the ninth overall all-purpose back in the nation by Rivals.

Kirk Fridrich will enter his second year as head coach at Union High School. Fridrich guided the Redskins to a 13-1 finish in 2007. Union dropped a 42-24 decision to Jenks in the Class 6A state championship game, although the Redskins defeated the Trojans 43-42 in overtime in a regular-season matchup last September. Triple Play – Abby Lewis – Bishop Kelley Bishop Kelley senior Abby Lewis recently captured her third individual state championship in Class 4A and helped lead the Comets to their sixth team state title in school history, three of which Lewis has been a part of. Her sister, Andrea, won her second straight title in No. 1 singles. Lewis, who has a 4.0 weighted GPA and is involved with her church youth group, a member of National Honor Society and Senior Class Board, will attend the University of Baylor where she plans on majoring in finance.

Paige McMurray just completed her first year as head tennis coach at Bishop Kelley and guided the Lady Comets to their third straight Class 4A state championship. McMurray coached at the University of Tulsa from 1996-2005 and became the school’s winningest coach in 2002. Owasso senior Jarrod Huneryager is a vital piece to the Rams’ baseball team. Huneryager, an outfielder/designated hitter, was batting .419 with four home runs and 10 runs batted in through Owasso’s first 11 games in 2008. Huneryager has also scored 12 runs for Owasso, which remains unbeaten on the season and ranked No. 1 in Class 6A.

Owasso head coach Larry Turner has maintained a power program for the Rams over the last three decades. In his 25th season as head coach at Owasso, Turner has led the Rams to seven state titles, the most recent coming last year, and four state runner-up finishes. Bishop Kelley senior Katie Bykowski is a 2007 NSCAA/Adidas Girls High School All-American. The Lady Comet goalkeeper is one of only four goalies in the country and 78 players overall to receive the honor. Katie has been a part of three state championship teams at Bishop Kelley. She allowed just one goal on 55 attempts in 2007 and helped lead the Lady Comets to an undefeated 18-0 mark.

Troy Tokarchik has led the Bishop Kelley girls’ soccer program to eight consecutive state championships since taking over in 2000. Tokarchik, who has coached 20 all-state players, led his 2001 and 2004 teams to NSCAA National Top 20 rankings and as high as a No. 7 ranking. Memorial senior Blaise Voskuhl Staab is averaging a team-high 15.3 points for the Class 6A seventh-ranked Chargers. The 6-foot-6 forward also averages 9.3 rebounds, has recorded 13 blocked shots and is shooting 47.7 percent overall from the floor.

Memorial head coach Eric Savage led the Chargers to the 2003 Class 6A state championship. The Chargers, led by lone returning starter Blaise Voskuhl Staab, are primed for a return to the state tournament in 2008. Ken Holdman Jr., a Missouri State University signee, is averaging 15.3 points per game for Class 5A, third-ranked East Central. The 6-foot senior guard is also pulling down 5.3 rebounds per contest and averages 3.1 assists and 4.5 steals. Holdman helped lead the Cardinals to the state tournament finals in 2007 as a junior.

East Central earned a trip to the Class 5A state tournament in head coach Brian Morgan’s second season at the helm. Hillary Bach can play just about any sport, but at Holland Hall she really enjoys playing volleyball and softball. She's had a great season in volleyball and now she turns her attention to softball. Next fall Hillary heads off to Arizona State University to play Division 1 Softball.

Haleigh Lankster is a senior at Booker T. Washington High School and plays on the varsity basketball team. She is a captain on the team and wants to help her squad to a state championship in her senior year. Haleigh is considered by many of her peers to be one of the better shooters in the state and can knock down three’s when needed.

Haleigh’s father, Paul Lankster, played his high school ball at Webster High School. He graduated in 1981 and is now a retired State Trooper. Head coach Annette Kennedy has coached the Booker T. Washington girls basketball team for 10 years taking them to the quarterfinals in 2007.
