Spring Is In The Air
Spring is in the air and with it comes rain drops and spring sports. Baseball, Soccer, Golf, and Track and Field have entered the middle of their seasons and local teams are gaining some national recognition. Some great players are making a splash in the headlines with superb outings and teams are making a run for greatness. In baseball the pitching is where the greatness can be found. With Bobby Bundy of Sperry, Brian Flynn at Owasso and Mark Ginther at Jenks it’s a wonder batters have a chance at the plate. Bundy displayed his authority against Oologah pitching a one-hitter in the 8-0 win in 5 innings. Bundy also went 3-3 from the plate with a two-run homer and four RBIs by the end of the day. Bundy, who is recovering from an ACL injury suffered at the end of basketball season, extended his record to 3-0 with the win after allowing two base runners while striking out eight. On the same day, Flynn struck out 15, while allowing three hits in 10 innings pitched against 6A No. 5 Broken Arrow in the Sand Springs Wood Bat Tournament. Flynn reached a pitch count well over 100 in the game and gave way to Tyler Sparks in the 11th inning. Sparks struck out three in two innings pitched and did not allow a base runner while earning the win. The 6A No. 1 Rams won on a squeeze play as batter James Stanfield got a bunt down that slipped under Tiger relief pitcher Lance Rymel’s hand as Cody Carpenter reached home to clinch the game winning run. The Rams, ranked No. 1 the ESPN HIGH ELITE 25 high school baseball rankings, extended their win streak to 22-0. Flynn was also impressive in an 8-0 run rule win over Sperry, during the Nike Pro 9 tournament as he sat down 12 of the 18 batters he faced. Owasso offense was led by Carpenter and Austin Kirk, who doubled to score Colby Williams and Carpenter, in the third inning. Ginther impressed in the Nike Pro 9 tournament at Owasso against arch-rival 6A No. 10 Union. Ginther struck out 14, allowed two hits, and earned his sixth win of the season in the 1-0 game. The 6A No.6 Trojans run came in the top of the first inning when Graham McIntyre scored on an error by the Redskin third baseman. Jenks also recorded their second win over Union in two games this season. The Broken Arrow Lady Tigers soccer team ranked No.2 in the 6A rankings, went to the St. Louis Soccer Classic and came away as the champions. The Lady Tigers coached by Lorie Witherspoon, are led by senior forward Summer White who recorded six goals in the 10-0 win over Memorial and two more goals in the Lady Tigers 5-0 win against Sand Springs. The Lady Tigers stretched their record to 8-0-1. 6A No.1 Jenks Lady Trojans are regionally ranked No. 5 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas high school rankings. In a 5-2 win over 6A No.7 Owasso, the Lady Trojans gave a balanced team effort with Miranda Zoller, Sarah Brown, Morgan Jones, Danielle Fuhrman, and Catherine Parish all scoring one goal a piece. The Bishop Kelley girls lead 5A led by midfielder Raquel Chavez. The Lady Comets will look to accomplish the three-peat after winning the 5A state title in ’06 and ’07. The Bishop Kelley boys look to stay atop the 5A rankings and win the state title for the second time in three years having won in 2006. In Boys soccer the Broken Arrow Tigers are ranked 14th nationally and 3rd regionally in the NSCAA/adidas high school rankings. Led by Memphis signee Thomas Shannon and Tulsa signees Austin Neil and Ben Petit, the Tigers are ranked fifth in the 6A coaches’ rankings. Ranked No.2 in 6A and No. 5 regionally, the Jenks Trojans boast a large number of seniors, 13 to be exact, and look to win their second state title in three seasons. The Union Redskins ranked No.3 in 6A look to repeat as state champions. Junior Lucas Miller had three goals and an assist in a 7-0 win over Stillwater and another goal in a 2-0 victory over Booker T.
