They say sports can bring people together. It’s crazy to think that a sport can bring twins even closer together. Soccer has done just that for Edison seniors Grace and Kay Durbin.

“Soccer does bring us together. We’ve been through a lot together on the soccer field and it definitely makes us closer,” said Grace, the older sister by a minute and a half.

Two of six seniors on the Edison girls soccer team, the center midfielders aren’t going to overly impress anybody with their speed. Self described as smart players who focus on passing and moving to attack the other team, the Durbin sisters are almost coaches on the field.

The girls now focus solely on soccer, but it wasn’t always that way. Growing up the girls tried many sports participating in softball, synchronized swimming and baton twirling. Kay participated in swimming for 7 years while Grace spent 5 years as a gymnast before both decided that soccer, which they had been playing since they were 6 or 7, was their true love.

The seniors look to lead for the Eagles this season and improve upon last year’s 8-7 record where both received team honors. Grace was the MVP, while Kay was second in scoring and named Offensive MVP.  This year, the team is excited and motivated, and looking to be successful with what is a talented team. As co-captains, the Durbin’s will have their full attention on improving the Eagles as their time as club players ran out after the team graduated.

Both played under ’89 Hurricane Futball Club head coach Justin Elkington for 8 years. HFC ’89 Elkington was a dominate force that won an Oklahoma Soccer Association record eight straight State Cup Championships.

“Our coaches, no matter who’s coaching us it seems, can never tell us apart. Even Justin after eight years,” Grace stressed.

“Even with our numbers on,” chimed Kay.

“It always seems like when Kay does something good he would think it was me. Or when Kay did something bad he would think it was me. So we would always have to correct him to get credit for doing something good,” finished Grace.

The sisters have never been on separate teams and hope to have that continue into college as Grace has decided to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago to play soccer. But for now their focus is on building upon last year’s turnaround for the Edison Eagles.
