When players, coaches, and fans think of Edison High School in Tulsa, you also include the name Jim Sellers. The former wrestling coach and Edison’s athletic director for 35 years died Tuesday at the age of 79. Sellers, a native of Tulsa, became athletic director in the school’s first year in 1956. While serving in the position for a career that spans parts of 5 decades, Sellers left a lifelong impression on the lives of everyone with whom he came in contact. While at Edison, Sellers was the wrestling coach from 1956 through 1967. The Eagles captured a state championship in 1965. Sellers also coached Edison’s golf team for five seasons that would produce the Tulsa school two state titles. Those who knew Jim Sellers understood his expectations for excellence…in athletics, the classroom, and in life. He earned that respect because he lived those expectations by example. And for his lifelong commitment, the gymnasium at Edison was named Jim Sellers Fieldhouse in 2005. Funeral services are set for 11am Friday, at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Tulsa.
