Memorial High School played host to the All-State soccer games where the high school stars of soccer were showcased for one last time in their careers. In the great debate of who is better, east or west, well chalk one up for the east in regard to soccer.

6A

In the 6A boys game, the East came out victorious over the West, 4-2. Led by early goals from John Clark of Muskogee and Union’s Jason Brooks, the East took an early 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes. Putnam City North’s Zach Brinlee netted a first-half goal to make the score 2-1 at half. Goals by East players Paul Girod (Jenks) and Keegan Cornelius of Sand Springs gave the East a lead it wouldn’t relinquish, although Westmoore’s Trey Boykin did put in the final goal of the game for both squads. Player of the Year Thomas Shannon was a participant for the East squad.

The 6A girls game didn’t go as well as their male counterparts as the West came out victorious in the 2-1 final. Choctaw’s Lauren Kolker gave the West an early 1-0 lead before Broken Arrow’s Summer White scored the only goal for the East and tied the game at 1-1. In the second half, Yukon’s Kayla Wright scored the only goal of the half to give the West victory.

5A

In 5A girl’s action, Shawnee’s Maria Gonzalez scored the only goal with 25 minutes remaining in the game to give the East another victory. Kay and Grace Durbin of Edison, highlighted in the Family Affair in the April issue, were named to the East squad.

For the 5A East boys, scoring came early and often. As Edison’s Ethan Arch and Catoosa’s Dakota Wallis netted goals within the first 10 minutes of the game. A goal by Booker T. Washington’s Christian Moya just before the half gave the East a 3-0 lead at intermission. Bishop Kelley’s Griffin Kane’s goal early in the second half made the game 4-0 in favor of the East. Rudy Vargas (Northwest Classen) and Nixon Tita (Western Heights) scored to cut the East lead in half and a Bo White (Durant) goal with just over eight minutes made it a one-goal contest. But the East was able to hold on for the win with a 4-3 victory.

4A

On what wsw a windy evening at LaFortune Stadium, the East girls were able to win 1-0. A goal in the 37th minute by Kyndall Treadwall of Cleveland was all the East needed. Oologah’s Jennifer Lewis and Caitlin Derr of Westville were credited with the shutout.

The 4A boys were unable to pull out a victory in what was a back-and-forth battle between the state’s best 4A players. The first goal of the game occurred with 6:40 left in the game off a penalty kick by Guymon’s Ulises Cabo. Oklahoma Christian’s Taylor Frost topped off the game with the second goal for the West with 2:30 left. Stuart Scofield of Classen was credited with the shutout in the 2-0 West victory.
