Mel Renfro occupies a spot in the Hall of Fame and on the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor. In 1964 the Cowboys drafted the track star from the University of Oregon to play wide receiver. He was moved to defense after the staff realized they had too many receivers. In 1969 he led the NFL in interceptions and is one of the original “shut-down” corners. He is also the Cowboys all-time interception leader with 52 total picks. In 1995 Renfro was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
VYPE cornered Renfro to be the first in a new series of Q&A’s with professional and college athletes called Take Five. Five questions about sports and life in general.

VYPE: What’s life been like since your induction into the Hall of Fame?
Renfro: I was given an opportunity to become part of an organization that helps people get into housing. An honest organization that puts the people first, Hall of Fame Mortgage.

VYPE: Are professional athletes today doing enough in their communities?
Renfro: Not as much as I would like to see. The incredible thing is that guys today make so much money and a lot of them have foundations where they contribute and that’s good but there should be more.

VYPE: So who was faster you or Bob Hayes?
Renfro: Well as a matter of fact when we set the world record at the University of Oregon in the 400 relay we ran against Bob Hayes. Our anchor guy Harry Jerome ran a 9.10 actually took the baton five yards behind Hayes and beat him to the finish line. We held that world record for about 35 years.

VYPE: What’s the day like when you’re inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame?
Renfro: The thing about it is when you grow up as a kid watching professional football players like Jim Brown, Y.A. Tittle and Johnny Unitas you never think in your wildest dreams you’ll get that far. I never thought I was capable of playing pro football until I was in college. It’s a dream come true. Being an alumni with the greats of the game is something you cherish forever.

VYPE: How would Mel Renfro cover the receivers of today like Terrell Owens and Randy Moss?
Renfro: Piece of cake. I was a pure cover guy. I never got much support or help. I knew how to backpedal and read. I had the speed too. It wouldn’t be much of an issue. We had some great receivers back in my day, Paul Warfield, Mel Gray, Cliff Branch. I covered them pretty well and I feel these guys today aren’t much better. I wouldn’t have any problem covering them.

Make sure you check in next week when VYPE and Tony Dorsett "TAKE FIVE"
