Alyssia Brewer’s talent on the basketball court continues to impress. Brewer, who was a standout at Sapulpa, was one of 12 players selected to the USA Basketball Women’s U18 National Team last week, following three days of trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Brewer, who will be a freshman at the University of Tennessee, was one of 35 players invited for tryouts. She was also a McDonald’s All-American this year, just the second player to ever receive such honors from Oklahoma.

The USA U18 National Team will be coached by University of Northern Illinois head coach Carol Owens.

“We’re really excited about Alyssia and what she will bring to this team,” Owens said. “The committee did an outstanding job with the selection process.

“All 35 of the girls that were brought in for tryouts were great scorers and very talented, but we just wanted 12 of the best players that would fit the best as a team and Alyssia was one of those players.”

Owens was high on Brewer and the many assets she brings to the game. The 6-foot-3 forward was a prolific scorer, rebounder and defender throughout her high school career, which also included one season at Jenks.

“Alyssia is a very talented player with great size,” Owens said. “She can do everything and play several different positions for us. She has great athleticism and is very versatile.”

Brewer and teammates will train from July 10-16 in Colorado, before moving to Washington D.C. for workouts from July 17-20.

Brewer led Sapulpa to the Class 6A state championship during her junior season and took the Lady Chiefs back to the finals as senior where they lost to Union.

She averaged 22.3 points on 50.8 percent shooting overall, 15.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and just under three blocks during her senior year.
