With todays spread offense and high powered schemes we have to ask the question, do defenses really win championships?
With todays spread offense and high powered schemes we have to ask the question, do defenses really win championships?

I believe every championship caliber team has the ability to play solid defense. Certainly if you don't give up many points the odds of winning the game are in your favor. More importantly, I believe, is matching your team's defense mentality with your team's offensive style and ability. Do you have a high powered, potent offensive team that scores a lot of points, or do you have an efficient offense that moves the ball and doesn't get you beat? If I had to pick and choose each year where to start my championship team, I would always choose a great defensive unit.

Though I believe playing great defense is critical to winning a championship, it still comes down to who has the best players. Good coaching, sound schemes, and playing hard are all key elements, but in the end, players win championships.

No doubt you need a good defense. Especially today when you see all of these high powered offenses that line up three and four receivers. They don't necessarily have to stop offenses on every possession they just can't give up big plays. We depend on our defense to get us a couple of extra possessions a game. When you look at our district (6A-4) you see the number of high powered offenses, you better have a good defense in order to compete.

Absolutely!!! A great defense always neutralizes the best offenses. As the old adage says, “If they can’t score, they can’t win”. Beyond that your defense can set up your offense with good field position either by a turnover or forcing a punt. 1- Defense, 2- special teams, and 3- offense, that order has one us many championships at Cascia Hall.
