With the passing leagues gaining popularity, do you fell they help your teams develop a passing game or do you use them to keep players active during the summer?

It was extremely important for us this year, as we are going to Texas Tech’s offense. However, as a defensive coach, I have always thought they were extremely important as they let you work with your linebackers on pass defense.
Once the season starts, your primary focus with your linebackers has to be on stopping the run. I don't know if there is a huge difference in the teams that do or don't, but your kids know they have done more than those that weren't there and that might be the mental edge that makes the difference.

Any time players can throw and catch they are going to improve their skills. So many teams now have a passing league offense that differs from the one that they run on Friday nights. I’m not sure that helps their scheme for the upcoming season. It usually works out that the schools from the bigger classes provide the stiff competition. That’s why the passing league that we host each summer is made up of schools that are much larger than we are. It helps us improve so much from beginning to end of summer.

No doubt it helps develop your quarterbacks, running backs, receivers and tight ends. The spread offense is becoming a common offense these days and teams that historically were running teams will line up in a shotgun and throw it. The other thing about these leagues is in 7-on-7 your defense gets to work. Linebackers get a chance to work in the passing defense and that’s huge. I’ve been passing for 23 year and now everyone is throwing it. But the passing leagues give you a chance to look at a passing offense and figure out what’s going to work for you, long before you show up for the first day of practice.

Working technique and teaching the passing game will help the offense understand the concepts of the offense and will teach them how to get open. It helps the quarterback who needs to learn how to see the defense and the defense needs to understand what the offense is showing them. The defense must learn to adapt to the passing game. More and more teams are going to spread still offenses and your defense must have an understanding of the passing game. We work our linebackers all year because last season we played two maybe three conventional offensive teams.
