To make the golf team at Central High School you must first have a pulse. Not really, that is a joke but golf is not necessarily one of the more popular sports at Central. With the success of Lee (Prince) we have certainly generated some interest in the game. I do not typically cut players but I do expect that they attend practice, maintain their academic eligibility and demonstrate good character both on and off the golf course.

There are no cuts at the high school level to try out for the team. The general procedure is that scores dictate the top five, and the rest continue to try and break into the top five. Most kids that are not working to get better in the summer time or off-season give up and quit. The kids that truly love the game do the work that will help them get better and never give up their effort. I usually wind up with around 10 boys and 7-8 girls. Golf requires too many hours of work for most kids to commit.

Students interested in playing golf for Holland Hall participate in several practices at the golf course. Their skills are assessed during these practices. Golfers must be able to shoot under 120 strokes for 18 holes to participate in tournaments. If they are not able to shoot under 120 they are still allowed to practice with the team if numbers allow.

We have risen from the worst team in 6A six years ago to a top three team this year. That being said, it takes a little more to make the team. I used to have to recruit athletes from other sports. We now have 14 girls on the team. We have tryouts where the girls putt, chip and hit. Based on that, I have a pretty good idea of their abilities. Usually, golf is not an intuitive sport. Having a pro teach them the game is the best decision they can make. I don’t mind taking a non-golfer on the team if they show great promise and have good hand hand-eye coordination.
