What's Up With Wills: Milson Offered Duncanville Job?

I’m a football-baseball guy. Always have been. But the Duncanville
boys basketball coaching vacancy has piqued my interest like few
others since Phil McNeely announced his retirement on March 27.

This is a premier coaching job — some might say one of the best in the
nation. McNeely won state titles every eight years from 1991 to 1999
to 2007. The Panthers won a mythical national title in ’07.

And yet news on the coaching search has literally been none existence.

So what’s going on here?

Multiple sources told VYPE.com that Cedar Hill coach David Milson was
offered the job but that nothing came of the talks with the coach of
the reigning 5A state finalists. Cedar Hill is of course right next
door to Duncanville, which only adds to the intrigue.

Duncanville athletic director Kevin Ozee said in a text message
Tuesday that “Milson was not offered" the job. OK, maybe not by Ozee.

Here’s what we do know, Ozee is going to find a great coach. I'd put
Ozee at the top of my list as the best athletic director in the area.
He hired football coach Jeff Dicus away from Lake Travis, one of the
best coaching hires I can remember. Ozee is as savvy as they come.

Ozee did write via text message that he had an interview set up for
Wednesday. He said in the text message that he “should have an
announcement next week.”

One strong candidate I figured on is ex-Plano coach Tom Inman, who
left the Wildcats last year and spent the past season as an assistant
coach at Arlington Bowie. But Inman isn’t a candidate, according to
sources.

Inman would have the ideal choice here. He’s done something that
Milson hasn’t done — win a state championship. Plano won the 2006
state title. Inman won district titles in four of his seven years at
Plano.

According to sources, Mansfield Timberview’s Eric McDade is a
potential candidate. He guided Timberview to the state tournament last
year.

Chris Dyer, whose DeSoto team beat Cedar Hill for the 5A title this
past spring, is not a candidate, according to sources. DeSoto is of
course also a neighboring town to Duncanville and like Cedar Hill a
huge rival for the Panthers.
