VYPE DFW Power Team: Luke Joeckel, Arlington

Dallas, TX

Monday, August 17, 2009

Power: The rate at which work is performed or energy is transmitted. Power: The ability to act or produce an effect. Power: The cumulative football talents of the members of VYPE’s preseason all-star lineup.

As the VYPE Nation looks forward to what promises to be another electrifying high school football season, we’ve taken the time, done the research and looked into our crystal ball to come up with a super-charged list of THE Dallas-Fort Worth area football players our experts predict will light up gridirons across the state in 2009.

Today's pick:

Offensive Line

Luke Joeckel

Arlington

6-6, 295, Sr.

A huge left tackle who protects twin brother Matt’s backside in pass pocket. Coaches credited this Texas A&M commitment with 161 knockdowns as a junior.

Previous picks:

Offensive Line

Garrett Gramling

Denton Ryan

6-5, 310, Sr.

Ryan’s second-team All-State big man helps protect Scotty Young. He combines great size with excellent balance and has committed to Texas A&M

Tight end

Rhett Butler

FM Marcus

6-2, 210, Sr.

This first-team District 6-5A pick combined size, good hands and speed to average 16 yards per catch as a junior. Butler has attracted offers from several schools.

Receiver

Darius White

FW Dunbar

6-4, 205, Sr.

The state’s top receiver recruit is big and fast. White, who had 40 catches for 1,047 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior, excels at running after the catch.

Receiver

Darius Terrell

DeSoto

6-3, 205, Sr.

A physical receiver who takes advantage of smaller defensive backs, Terrell had 34 receptions and 6 touchdowns in 2008. He has committed to Texas.

Receiver

Michael Davis

Skyline

6-2, 180, Sr.

Prototypical big-play receiver combines speed and leaping ability. This LSU commitment hauled in 58 catches for 1,138 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior.

Running Back

Ben Malena

Cedar Hill

5-9, 200, Sr.

Elusive, but tough enough to run through single tacklers, he rushed for 2,202 yards and 35 touchdowns last season. Malena has committed to Texas A&M.

Running Back

Ja’Terian Douglas

Arlington Lamar

5-11, 185, Sr.

Lamar’s workhorse rushed for 2,036 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2008. Showed ability to take over a game by running wild for 353 yards and 5 touchdowns against Arlington Sam Houston.

Quarterback

Zach Lee

McKinney

6-4, 195, Sr.

This LSU commitment passed for almost 3,000 yards and 33 touchdowns in 11 games last season. As good as he is throwing the football, Lee may decided to use his arm as a pro baseball player.
