I Hear That...
I hear that one of last year’s most heralded high school
quarterbacks is leaving his Collin County school to play in Oklahoma. The move
comes after he was implicated in a severe on-campus disciplinary incident. I
hear the team is more than ready to move on.
That makes at least two prominent area quarterbacks who will be missing from their team’s first game starting lineup due to disciplinary actions.
VYPE Football Preview Cover Boys?
Who will be VYPE’s 2009 Football Preview cover boys? The odds of your school getting a player on our coveted cover will double this year. VYPE will publish two Football Preview issues, Class 5A and 4A teams in August and Class 3A, 2A, 1A and private school capsules in our September issue. Considering that VYPE will feature three different covers each month, that’s six football preview covers to keep an eye out for.
By the way, if you’d like to submit photos of your favorite team or players for our football preview, e-mail me at tim.polzer@vype.com
Are Two-a-Days On Way Out?
The National Athletic Trainers' Association on Thursday called for Texas high school coaches to reduce their use of two-a-day practices in the summer heat.
While the trainers make an excellent point, most stories don’t mention that many high school coaches – especially in Texas – have already addressed heat and hydration safety during their preseason practices. And don’t forget the abundance of indoor practice facilities that are popping up at most schools. So don’t look for a major change in the way Texas high school coaches prepare their teams.
Local College World Series Flavor
If you haven’t been watching the College World Series, tune in tonight at 6 p.m. for a chance to catch area high school products battle for a national baseball championship.
Texas catcher Cameron Rupp, who played at Prestonwood Christian Academy, could face another PCA product in Arizona State freshman pitcher Jordan Swagerty. Swagerty pitched well in relief when the teams met earlier this week and was rested during yesterday’s elimination win over North Carolina. That probably makes Swagerty ASU’s first reliever if starter Mike Leake or Seth Blair gets into trouble.
Rowlett product Brandon Loy has also been a big contributor, producing key RBIs and making THE defensive play of the CWS, as the Longhorns’ shortstop.
College baseball may be one of the least-watch major sports, but it also provides one of the best opportunities for high school players to contribute as freshmen.
Dallas Sports Decade of Irrelevance?
It dawned on me the other day: Has anyone noticed that Dallas-area pro sports franchises are 0-for-the decade? Unless the Rangers win the next World Series, the last Dallas team to claim a championship will be the 1999 Stars.
