Channel 21 Recap: Where's Whitlock Going?
By: Po1
|
Last night, TXA 21 gave me another shot at proving why I have a face for radio -- small-market radio.
Prior to my segment, anchor Bill Jones was raving about Wylie nose guard Nikita Whitlock, and was wondering what kind of recruiting interest he's receiving.
I didn't have much of an answer for Jones, though we both came to the conclusion that a couple of local college programs with high-powered offenses -- SMU and NTU -- could use what some consider to be a small line clogger like Whitlock as the anchor of their defensive revivals.
If anyone out there has a clue, let me hear from you.

A Big Void

Anyone who has watched them play this year knows what a huge part of Rockwall-Heath's success has been due to star running back Kendial Lawrence. Well, the Hawks will have to see what life is like without their heavily-recruited runner this weekend. An injured shoulder means all Lawrence can do this weekend is cheer his team on against Sulphur Springs from the sidelines. Here's more:link--Steve Hunt

Carter's Smash Mouth Offense
By: gopokes

This weekend, Carter advanced by doing what they've been doing all year on offense, running the ball right down their opponent's throat. Matt Wixon of the Morning News took notice and here's his take:link--Steve Hunt

Random Rumblings from the Weekend
By: gopokes
|
Covered the Pilot Point/Gunter game on Friday and there were a couple of interesting notes: First off, this game was over before 9:45, a first for me this year. Two teams that run the ball almost the whole game. Pilot Point prevailed 15-13 but this one wasn't without some drama. Gunter was deep in Pilot Point territory with around a minute left when they decided to run between tackles. That was when a Pilot Point player ripped the ball out of the Gunter running back's hands, effectively icing the game. Can't say I've ever seen a game end like that, so it was definitely interesting.
Have a few other thoughts on the weekend. Hats off to Frisco Legacy Christian. They won over the weekend in Waco and are now in the TAPPS Division IV semifinals. The Eagles have made a nice leap considering they didn't even make the playoffs a year ago.
Bigger kudos go to the Lovejoy volleyball team, who won the 3A state crown in volleyball over the weekend. They were the top team in 3A all year, so them winning is no big surprise. But still, considering the Leopards did it in year two of their program is quite impressive.
Both Prosper and Celina remain alive in Class 3A. They are in different divisions, so they won't meet in the playoffs. If the Bobcats can win again this weekend, is it time to consider them a serious threat to repeat in 3A? Prosper's run has been no less impressive and they can win the region should they prevail over Van this weekend.

What Pressure?
By: gopokes

Watching Hebron QB Justin Iwuji play for the first time, without looking at the Hawks' roster, it would be hard to otherwise know that this is his first year starting under center. He has already helped lead Hebron to one playoff win over LD Bell. Could more be forthcoming? Here's a feature on him from Matt Wixon:link--Steve Hunt

More of the Same
By: gopokes
|
Rumors of Celina's demise in Class 3A have been greatly exaggerated. Covered the reigning state champs' playoff opener with Van Alstyne on Friday night at Frisco Memorial and once again, the Bobcats have the look of a contender. As always, they do it on the ground. QB Cody Worrell had four TDs and star runner Troy McCartney added two more. All in all, some six different players found the end zone for Celina in the blowout win of 54-13.
Van Alstyne's QB Jake Willingham is quite the versatile player. Not only does he play under center but he also punts and handles the placekicking duties. They finish the year at 7-4, a mark many teams would gladly have taken at this point in the year.

McNabb's Bold Pick: No. 1 Trinity's 1-and-Done
By: Po1
|
VYPE columnist David McNabb isn't one to make waves just to get attention. So keep that in mind when you peruse his Playoff Pick-It Fence Predictions.
David predicts that Trinity -- No. 1 in the VYPE National, State and Area Rankings -- will lose to Flower Mound Marcus in the first round.
Well done Mr. McNabb...but what do I know -- David beat me by one game in our regular-season Pick-It Fence contest.
