Wildcats lose close one in championship match

Plano’s Gold Division team enjoyed a successful run in the state hockey tournament by fell one goal short in the championship game.

Plano’s bid to send their state championship hopes into overtime was knocked off course by Jesuit. A last-second shot by Plano’s Jason Bell gave the Wildcats hope of tying the Texas Amateur Hockey Association (TAHA) finals match at 2 until Jesuit goalie Robbie Nichols deflected the puck away.
The Wildcats had a tough time against Nichols, who came up with several spectacular saves.
Plano was forced to rally when Jesuit scored two quick goals in the first period. After a scoreless second period, Plano’s Kisan Parikh got the Wildcats within one with a goal with just over six minutes remaining in the game.
The Wildcats earned their trip to the championship round with several big wins at the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center. Plano reached the final game when dramatic a goal by Eric Elfenbein broke up a 0-0 tie with just over three minutes left in its semifinals match against Flower Mound. Plano goalie Tim Franda’s stalwart work in the crease, including 18 saves, kept the Wildcats in the game. Franda also shutout Round Rock ISD, 5-0, in the Wildcats’ first-round match.

Plano West wins City Championship
The Wolves can claim partial Plano and Collin County bragging rights after winning the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League Gold Division city title. Led by the goaltending of Steven Sisler and scoring of Greg Douglas (27 goals, 39 points) and Hasheen Lad (32 points), Plano West finished atop the standings with a record of 20-6-2 and defeated eventual state champion Jesuit for the city title.
Plano West opened play at the TAHA state tournament with a 2-0 loss to Flower Mound, but Stuart Freiner’s overtime goal won the Wolves’ fifth-place game over Cinco Ranch.
