Collin County swimmers qualified for state meet
Plano’s girls swim team avenged an earlier loss to Southlake Carroll in winning their 19th straight 5A Region III championship. The Plano boys team finished second, behind Flower Mound. Plano coach Phillip Wiggins was named 5A Region III Coach of the Year and Plano senior Steven Nelms was voted the region’s Boy Athlete of the Year.
Plano senior Genny Konicke paced the girls with a time of 23.81 in the 50-yard freestyle sprint and also qualified for state in the 100-yard freestyle. Konicke also joined teammates Kristen Gilson, Leanne Hill, Deanna Marks and Caitlin Rogers in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. Marissa Konicke and Kelsey Konicke teamed with Stelly Flores and Rogers in earning a state berth in the 100-yard medley relay. Rogers snared a shot at a state title in the 100-yard butterfly.
Nelms led the boys squad winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.24. Scott Weeks finished first in the 100-yard backstroke. The Wildcats’ 200 freestyle relay team of Nelms, Weeks, Kevin Yang and Randall Reams also booked a trip to Austin.
Plano West’s Timothy Juhn won the 100-yard breaststroke. Senior Maureen McLain finished first in the 200-yard freestyle, besting her own district meet record with a time of 1:52.07. She also won the 500-yard freestyle event.
Plano East freshman Ean Tuann won a place at the state meet with a third-place finish of 24.87 in the 50 freestyle.
Allen’s Jeremiah Grey placed first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.10.
Class 4A
At the Region III-4A meet, McKinney Boyd qualified 12 swimmers for the state meet.
Jon Ropson earned berths in two events – 200-yard medley and 500 freestyle. He was joined by Blake Ganey, Brad Hanks, Andy Martin, Kevin Mattson and David Shelton.
Lady Broncos’ Erika Brown (100 backstroke) and Kayla deBoer (200 medley) grabbed individuals invitations. They were joined by relay swimmers Maggie Bates, Erika Brown, Kelly Martin, Jordan Moore and Catherine Noring.
McKinney’s Michael Clark won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle at the 4A region III meet. Clark was joined in Austin by 200 freestyle relay teammates Trey Evans, Eric Prinslow and Nico Mucci. The same foursome also qualified in the 200 medley relay.
McKinney also sent its 200 medley relay team of Erikka Dominguez, Sarah Nicole May, Kaitlyn Swan and Hannah Weise. Diver Mikey Kutsuchke also qualified for the 1-meter event.
McKinney North junior Emma deBoer’s 200 freestyle effort qualified for state as an at-large time. Wray Borland, Matt Nichols, Jed Pajela and Kyle Vervalin were bound for state in the 200 medley relay. Nichols and Vervalin, along with Jacob Rollins and Robert Sussmeier, also qualified in the 400 free relay.
TAPPS
Prestonwood Christian Academy’s girls team finished sixth in Division II. PCA’s Kathryn Heasley, Lindsay Lennington, Chandler Ferrell and Tiffani Hall won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 2:05.50. Maddy Bell finished third in the 500 freestyle.
Trinity Christian Academy’s boys and girls teams placed 10th in the Division I TAPPS state meet in San Antonio.
