Jesuit golfer Jordan Spieth was the only area player to advance to the second round of match play Wednesday at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

Spieth, a sophomore, rallied to defeat Ryan Marks of Warrensburg, Mo., 2 and 1, in his opening match at Shoal Creek (Ala.) Country Club. Spieth finished the front nine trailing by two holes, then took the lead with a birdie 2 at the 13th hole and closed out the match with a birdie 4 at the 536-yard 17th.

Highland Park's Cody Gribble finished second in stroke-play qualifying at 140, one shot behind medalist Jorge Fernandez Valdes of Argentina. But Gribble lost to Andrew Steinhofer of Madison, Wis. in match play, 5 and 4.
