A soccer field is pretty big. Eleven players try to spread themselves to create space, but they also need to know who’s going where and what the others are thinking. HSSTM asked area girls soccer coaches what aspects of communication are most important and what they stress to their players.

Obviously the language used throughout a soccer match is different than what other sports use. Therefore, the need to ensure all players and coaches understand the language is important. Our captains are coaches on the field and most of the communication is directed towards them. There are several different ways to communicate on a soccer field – verbally, whistling, clapping, hand gestures or just eye contact between the players. The most important aspect of communication I stress to our team is we can never have an too much of it.

Communication is extremely important in soccer because during a game, there is always so much going on that without it, your team cannot be effective. The players on the field know that each individual can only see a small portion of the field, but with the help of their teammates, they can know exactly what is going on all around them. This aids each player with quickly making decisions and doing the right thing to make the team successful.

As a girls soccer coach, it is important to use the correct tone and body language to communicate effectively. A positive approach even when being critical has merit. Invariably, girls listen less to what we say than to how we say it. We only allow positive, constructive comments between our staff and players. Negative comments and gestures quickly destroy player relationships and tear down team morale. As we communicate, other aspects that we stress are honesty, listening to one another (even if you don't agree), respect for each other, and accountability for your individual performance. If all of our players are on the same wavelength, then our team communication on the field becomes self-understood, regardless of any outside circumstances.

Communication in soccer is the key to holding everything together, whether it is in practice or in a game. It is necessary for everyone to use appropriate communication for the enjoyment of the game and the successful execution of the sport. I have found that with girls, communication can be taken the wrong way if you are not careful. The tone and actions accompanying the communication will influence and impact the response given. Every player on the field must communicate in a way that is constructive and effective and we emphasize this in every practice.
