With the season well underway, how do you manage your rotation? How do you work your substitutions to make sure you have the right players in the right spots at all times? What kind of factor does rotation play in the grand scheme of a game or match?

We have our athletes battle for positions in our specialty and team play sessions. From there it's plugging in the athletes so that we have as few weak rotations as possible. We want to see if the chemistry is good. Is the communication between players good? The starting rotation may change from match to match and/or from game to game, depending on our opponent. The coaching staff rank order players by position and indicate their strengths and weaknesses. We also have almost every possible substitution line-up already written up on paper. For big matches, especially tournament time, we have match-ups detailed for every possible starting rotation our opponent has used and we spin the dial to find our best line up to win as many rotations as possible. Rotations determine the winner of a contest. We try to find our opponent's best two rotations and we spin our starting rotation dial to stop them or reduce the harm. We also identify our opponent's weak rotations and devise a plan to score as many points when our opponents are in this rotation.

Rotations? I always try several rotations, it all depends on my team and strengths. This year, I will be running a 6;1 with one setter. My setter will be starting in the middle with my strongest hitter starting in the left front. With my libero, rotations are easy; I will be using only two back row subs. I am a defensive coach, so I love to sub in defensive players.

Our rotation has a lot to do with the level of volleyball experience. Having a strong returning junior class, we look to first fuel our lineup with these returnees. I enjoy having the flexibility of building a rotation around our passers or hitters. We have a dominant middle hitter who starts M1 most of the time. I expect my outside hitters to lead the back row in passing just as they lead in the front row with their hitting. We like to use a libero whenever possible, but work on the strengths of each girl to determine who is on the court at what time. Depending on where you start a rotation, it could allow you to win or lose a game.
