Goals are often the first thing coaches and players hammer home during preseason practices. So we asked four football coaches, what kind of goals do you set with your team? Are they more individual or team-oriented?

“We set more team goals than individual goals and our team goal starting off every year is to win conference and if you do that, you can go from there. Everything we do is more team-oriented and every year the first goal is to win more games than we did the last year and more game than Gravette has ever won. The individual goals are going to be set by the individual and we want to be talking more about team because kids have it in their minds what they what to accomplish themselves in my opinion.”

“We talk about team goals what we want to do as a team and how we want to be perceived by everyone and our fans. We kind of break it down into sections where we have a non-conference part of our schedule, conference and then hopefully, you get into the playoffs. So we have goals for each one of those scenarios. We want to have an attainable goal for each one of those three. We don’t want to go out and say our goal is to go undefeated because if you stub your toe that first week, you’ve upset the rest of the season. But we want to have a winning nonconference season and we play pretty touch teams. Then conference, you want to win it but the goal is to get into the playoffs because you can’t get in Little Rock without being in playoffs. Then when you get to playoffs, the goal is to win a state championship. They are realistic goals.”

“We don’t really talk about winning a state championship to tell you the truth. In order to do that, our goals are to win first game, win the conference and win a state championship. That’s the way we do it. We don’t talk about things that happen in December in July. We never go in wanting to win three state championships in a row. We focus on the present and work hard that day. We try to focus every single day to do the best we can, not next year, not next month and not next year … we talk about today. This morning, we focused on the best possible workout we could have. We try to take care of things as they occur on the calendar. Today is the only thing we can do anything about. We can’t do anything about yesterday or anything about tomorrow, but you can do something today and that’s to work as hard as you possibly can work.”

“Our biggest thing is once we hit offseason, we have the kids meet with each of their position coaches one on one and individual goals are written down in a notebook. We really stress team success leads to individual success because they pretty much go hand-in-hand. Our goal is to compete for conference title and be in Little Rock in December. That’s the ultimate goal. If you can get close to achieving those, the individual goals will come along the way. But usually team success is what makes those individual goals achievable.”
