Certainly numbers are important, but I believe the number of committed people in your program is what's most important from the players, coaches, community, and school. I believe quality people are vital, work ethic and commitment are a must. A flexible and sound system is essential. As with any successful organization, people make it work. Their approach, expectations, willingness to dedicate themselves and improve, and their relentless pursuit of excellence are all parts of the success of an operation. Personally, I would take a group of committed people over a group of talented people any day, give me both and the sky is the limit.

Enrollment in my opinion only plays an important part to your success if you are on the top or bottom of your classification. In our case it helps. East Central sits anywhere between 34th and 38th as far as enrollment, (approx. 1190 students). This puts us at the top of the 5A classification as far as students and probably helps us with the number of potential student/athletes we have to choose from.

My opinion on this issue is, I believe that enrollment does have an effect on program success if you are trying to build a program. If your program is developed then a large enrollment is not much of a factor. It is a hard question to define because if your program is doing well then you will get most of the athletes out of what ever you enrollment is and if your program is suffering then your numbers in athletics will not be high no matter how large the enrollment is at your school.

Obviously enrollment has something to do with it because you have more kids to draw from. Programs that have been on top have great junior high programs and elementary programs to draw from as well. But the coaches play a major part in the success of a school. The coaches must be able to evaluate the talent and put kids in the right positions. Kids at Jenks and Union start at a young age and their molded to be Trojans. Most schools don't have that. Here at Memorial we don't know where our kids come from until they get here in junior high. But regardless we'll put 11 guys on the field and play against the big boys.
