It allows us to compete with schools with the same enrollment so we are on a more even playing field. We still do compete with the larger schools, which allows us to play more teams out of the district and we can play different styles of football. It makes football better because a lot of the smaller schools have gotten more kids to play because they felt they could win if they didn’t have to play only the big schools. At Atherton, we went from 19 players to 60 players and a lot of that was due to the new alignment.

Our district only changed a little with the addition of the classifications, so I do not believe we were strongly impacted in our regular season. It does even things out for smaller schools in the playoffs. Three years ago, we entered the playoffs as one of the smallest schools and had to play the largest school in Class A--they were more than twice our size. But, I believe any quality program would play anyone they were matched up against in the playoffs and not complain--we just want a shot at the title.

The new alignment to six classes hasn’t affected my team very much. We are a new program (6 years old) and our program hasn’t had a chance to be affected by the alignment change. It seems that everyone wants to play us, because we are a new program.

At Louisville Holy Cross we have been fortunate to have made the playoffs for many years now as the district champions or runner-up for 9 of the past 10 years, and reached the quarterfinal Region Championship game for 5 of the last 10 years. Some of our district opponents are early in the development of their football programs and this is one reason we schedule “up” for all of our non-district games with 3, 4, 5, and 6A teams. This has been our policy years before the creation of 6 classes. The creation of 6 classes has not eliminated the perennial Class A powerhouse teams we must face at some point in the future to win a state championship.
