I believe anytime you give kids a reason to say “NO” to any illegal substance it is good plan. However, I do believe recreational drugs are a much bigger problem in our schools than steroids. I wish the state would put money into testing all high school students for recreational drugs along with steroids for athletes. I think it would be a good idea to drug test any student who drives a car to school.

The more we are able to test kids, the better off we will be. The Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD has drug tested the past few years. Included in our testing is steroids, so we have been a step ahead. As a coach, I need to know who I can depend on. If kids know you are testing, I feel it deters them from using an illegal substance.

I’m extremely disappointed that high school sports have come down to this. I don’t believe there is a big problem in high school sports to warrant the kind of money that is going to be spent testing for steroids. I think coaches are doing a better job educating their athletes on the dangers of steroid use.

I think it is a good thing. But it should not be the sole responsibility of the uil. It is going to take parents, teachers, and coaches working together to educate our kids. It is a shame that sports has drifted from a fun experience to one where we all put so much emphasis on winning and chasing scholarships. It is not a surprise that young people feel pressure to use performance enhancing drugs. As adults we need to work hard to let our young people understand that high school sports is not win at all costs.
